Saxon Textile Research Institute

Saxon Textile Research Institute (STFI) is a German non-profit research institution focusing on process-related and product-related research work and covering all classical textile technologies as well as innovative technical solutions for a wide range of applications in nonwovens and technical textiles.

The combination of know-how and technical equipment at the institute led in the year 2000 to the establishment of the Competence Center of Excellence in Nonwovens and in the year 2005 to the inauguration of a Technical Centre for Spunbond Nonwovens.

In spring 2017, the Center for Textile Lightweight Engineering was inaugurated. Furthermore, a Center for Textile Sustainability is just under construction and will be opened in spring 2024. STFI runs an accredited Textile Testing Laboratory as well as a Certification Department for Protective Textiles and carries out all commonly required textile physical, physiological, chemical and optical investigations for fibres, yarns, fabrics and clothing as well as geotextiles.

STFI has been dealing with the recycling of all kinds of textile waste for more than 25 years. The equipment and know-how concerning mechanical textile recycling available at STFI meet the highest international state of the art. This is especially valid for the different fibre nonwoven plants but also for the cutting and tearing machinery to prepare textile waste.

Their role in PESCO-UP

Following its experience, STFI is mainly involved in the “textile” work packages, both as task leader and contributor. STFI is responsible for yarn spinning and textile production, including also the evaluation of the recycled cotton and PES fibres and their processing into textile fabrics by weaving, knitting or nonwoven production. STFI also contributes to the development of a circular textile demonstrator.

STFI is furthermore involved in supporting the evaluation of the upcycling routes and the communication/dissemination activities.
